M&S is not where you do your weekly shop. The pricing model is premium, the stores are food-only, and many items cost more than the equivalent at Tesco or Waitrose. But for specific low-carb categories — sausages especially — M&S beats every other UK supermarket on what actually matters: meat percentage, carb count, and ingredient integrity.

The 97% pork sausage with 0g of carbs doesn’t exist anywhere else at a major UK supermarket. The Remarksable Value chicken is priced competitively with discount retailers while being RSPCA Assured and Better Chicken Commitment compliant. The Courgetti ready meal is one of the only genuinely low-carb ready meals in mainstream UK grocery retail.

This guide covers what’s worth buying, what to avoid, and the honest answer to whether M&S justifies the premium for low-carb shoppers.

UK label note: The Carbohydrates figure on UK nutritional labels already shows net carbs — fibre is listed separately. No subtraction needed.

Price note: Most M&S prices were not verifiable in aggregated retail data at the time of writing. Verified prices are marked; unverified are listed as approximate based on comparable products. Always check current in-store pricing.

Key Takeaways

  • M&S Our Best Ever Pork Sausage (97% pork, 0g carbs) is the best low-carb sausage in any UK supermarket — nothing at Tesco, Sainsbury’s, or Asda comes close
  • Oakham Gold chicken (legs £1.50/600g, wings £1.65/750g) is exceptional value for high-welfare poultry and directly competes with budget supermarket pricing
  • M&S does not stock a genuine low-carb bread or wrap — LivLife has been delisted and no own-brand replacement exists
  • “High Protein” does not mean low-carb in the bakery aisle: M&S High Protein White Rolls contain 38.4g of carbs per 100g
  • Marinated “sticky” or “BBQ” meats contain significant hidden sugars — look for spice-rubbed options instead
  • Avoid vanilla Greek yogurt (9.2g carbs/100g) — stick to plain full-fat (4.0g)
  • The Dine In meal deal is poor value for keto shoppers — you pay for carbohydrate sides and desserts you won’t eat

Sausages and Meat

This is M&S’s strongest category for low-carb shoppers by a significant margin.

M&S Our Best Ever Pork Sausage

~£4.00

The premium Collection tier. Still exceptional at 0.6g carbs per 100g. A meaningful step up from the Asda Extra Special (2.2g) or Tesco Finest equivalents.

M&S British Free Range Pork Sausages

~£3.50

Per 100g

1.4g

net carbs

Per serving

0.9g

Per serving

0g

Per serving

0g

per wing

Low

750g of high-welfare wings for £1.65. One of the best-value items in the entire store for a low-carb shopper. Season with a dry rub, roast at high heat, and you have the best wings outside of a restaurant.

M&S Select Farms British Beef Mince 12% Fat

£5.00 (500g)

Per 100g

0g

net carbs

Per serving

Choose the 12% or 20% fat variant over the 5% lean mince for a low-carb diet — you need the fat for energy and satiety. 100% British traceable beef.

M&S British Outdoor Bred Unsmoked Streaky Bacon

~£3.50

Per 100g

0.4g

net carbs

Per serving

0.1g

per rasher

Low

Streaky bacon is preferable to back bacon on keto — higher fat-to-protein ratio. Just 0.4g of carbs per 100g, minimal curing sugars used.

A critical warning on marinated and glazed meats: M&S ready-to-cook seasoned products vary enormously. The Peri-Peri Chicken Kebabs (1.7g carbs/100g) are fine. The Sticky BBQ Chicken Wings (4.6–6.8g carbs/100g) are not — the “sticky” and “BBQ” in the name signals sugar-based glazes. Always check the label on anything with a marinade.

0.3g

Per serving

0.4g

Low

0.4g carbs per 100g, preserved in olive oil rather than sunflower oil. The premium tinned fish option. Avoid the sardines in tomato sauce — the tomato sauce pushes carbs to 2.4g per 100g.

M&S Danish Mackerel Fillets in Olive Oil

~£2.00

Per 100g

1.3g

net carbs

£3.00

Per 100g

24.6g

net carbs

Per serving

4.9g

per 20g (2 squares)

Medium

24.6g per 100g sounds high, but nobody eats 100g of 85% dark chocolate. Two squares (20g) delivers just 4.9g of carbs with a complex, intense flavour profile. A luxury treat that fits easily into a tracked low-carb day.

M&S Collection Roasted and Salted Mixed Nuts

~£3.50

Per 100g

6.6g

net carbs

Per serving

1.6g

per 25g

Low

6.6g carbs per 100g. A clean roasted nut mix. Avoid the natural mixed nuts (13.8g/100g) and the chopped mixed nuts (10.4g/100g) — the roasted and salted Collection range is the best macro profile here.

M&S Chicken Liver Pâté

~£3.00
Avoid duck & orange variant

Per 100g

6.2g

net carbs

Per serving

3.1g

per 50g

Medium

6.2g carbs per 100g. A traditional low-carb deli staple. Important: avoid the Collection Smooth Duck and Orange Pâté — the orange jelly cap and added sugar push it to 11.1g carbs per 100g.

Plant Kitchen

M&S Plant Kitchen Organic Super Firm Tofu (300g)

£2.50

Per 100g

1.2g

net carbs

Per serving

1.8g

per 150g

Low

The standout low-carb product in the entire Plant Kitchen range. 1.2g carbs per 100g and 12.6g protein. Made from organic soybeans set with Nigari salt — no starchy binders. Everything else in Plant Kitchen needs label checking, as potato starch and rice flour are common.

Ready meals: what’s usable

Most M&S ready meals are not suitable for low-carb eating. The Count On Us range is built around caloric restriction with starchy bases (rice, potato). The Gastropub range is indulgent comfort food built on pastry and potato. Avoid both entirely.

Two exceptions worth knowing:

M&S High Protein Chicken and Mushroom Courgetti

~£6.00

Per 100g

1.8g

net carbs

Per serving

6.7g

per 370g pack

Medium

One of the only genuinely low-carb ready meals in mainstream UK grocery retail. Courgette noodles replace wheat pasta entirely, delivering just 1.8g carbs per 100g and 6.7g for the whole pack. Availability can be patchy — check Ocado if not in-store.

M&S Nutrient Dense Cauli-Rice Prawn Paella

~£7.00

Per 100g

4.0g

net carbs

Per serving

16.0g

per 400g pack

High

Cauliflower rice replaces standard rice. Originally designed for people on GLP-1 weight-loss medications (Mounjaro, Wegovy) who need maximum nutrition from minimal calories — but the macros work equally well for low-carb eating. 4.0g carbs per 100g is reasonable for a complete meal.

What M&S doesn’t have: bread

M&S currently has no genuine low-carb bread option. LivLife — which offered approximately 3.8g of carbs per slice — has been delisted across M&S in 2025–2026, along with Waitrose.

The M&S High Protein White Rolls contain 38.4g of carbohydrates per 100g (26.9g per roll). The Nutrient Dense Super Seeded Oaty Sliced Bread contains 17.4g per 100g (10.4g per slice). Neither is suitable for strict low-carb eating. “High protein” and “seeded” do not mean low-carb — these products are built on standard wheat flour with protein or seeds added on top.

If you need low-carb bread at M&S, the answer is currently: there isn’t one. Use the almond flour sandwich loaf recipe or source BFree wraps elsewhere.

Sparks loyalty card

The M&S Sparks scheme is less directly useful for low-carb food shoppers than Waitrose’s myWaitrose scheme. Sparks is algorithm-driven via the smartphone app and delivers personalised percentage discounts on specific categories. The free product rewards are frequently baked goods and Percy Pig sweets, which are not relevant here. However, the app does occasionally deliver 10–20% off fresh meat — worth activating before a visit if you’re buying steak or salmon.

Is M&S worth it for low-carb shoppers?

For specific things, unambiguously yes. The sausage range is genuinely unique — no other mainstream UK supermarket offers a 97% pork, zero-carb sausage at the high street. The Remarksable Value chicken pricing is competitive with Asda and Lidl while being meaningfully better welfare. The 3-Year-Old Cornish Cruncher Vintage Cheddar and the Peruvian 85% dark chocolate are excellent low-carb treats.

For a full weekly shop, M&S is expensive and incomplete — no low-carb bread, no specialist keto products, no equivalent to the budget ranges at Asda or Aldi. Use it as a targeted destination: sausages, charcuterie, premium chicken, and occasional treat items. Pair with a budget supermarket for everyday staples.

One honest note on the Dine In meal deal: for keto shoppers, it is poor value. The centrepiece proteins (whole chickens, beef joints) are typically fine, but the bundled side dishes (dauphinoise potatoes, triple-cooked chips, macaroni cheese) and desserts (cheesecakes, sticky toffee pudding) are entirely incompatible with low-carb eating. You end up paying for food you can’t use. Buy the protein standalone from the meat counter instead.
