The Ultimate Low-Carb Guide to Aldi & Lidl (2026)

A complete guide to the best keto-friendly and low-carb products at Aldi UK and Lidl UK, with exact macro breakdowns, prices, and the products you need to avoid.

Low Carb Life

Contributor

Aldi and Lidl are the cheapest places to do low-carb in the UK. A standard monthly shop at Aldi averages around £162 — roughly £24 less than Tesco with a Clubcard, and over £55 less than Waitrose. When your diet relies heavily on meat, dairy, eggs, and nuts, that gap adds up fast.

This guide covers the best low-carb products across both stores, organised by aisle, with exact macro data and prices. We’ve also flagged the products that look keto-friendly but aren’t — the “health halo” traps that catch people out every week.

UK label reminder: The Carbohydrates figure on UK labels already shows net carbs — fibre is excluded. No subtraction needed. Read our full explainer.

Bread & Wraps — The Honest Truth

This is where Aldi and Lidl fall short. Unlike Tesco (which stocks LivLife and BFree permanently), neither discounter has a reliable, permanent low-carb bread on the shelf.

The Lidl protein roll situation: Lidl’s fresh High Protein Rolls were a cult favourite among keto and diabetic shoppers — genuinely low-carb, made with linseed and wheat protein. They were discontinued several years ago, and despite petitions and social media campaigns, they haven’t returned. Lidl replaced them with packaged “Rowan Hill” branded items, but as you’ll see in the Avoid section below, these are not low-carb.

What’s actually available:

Bakers Life / Seriously Low Carb Bread

~£1.99
Special Buy — intermittent

Per 100g

10.5g

net carbs

Per serving

5.0g

per slice (~45g)

Medium

When it appears, this is a genuine low-carb option. The problem is availability — it's a Special Buy, not a permanent line. Regional and intermittent. Stock up and freeze if you spot it.

Romaine Lettuce Hearts

~£0.69

Per 100g

1.2g

net carbs

Per serving

0.5g

per large leaf

Low

The most reliable 'bread replacement' in either store. Sturdy enough for burger buns, wraps, and sandwich fillings. Zero carb drama, always in stock.

Practical advice: Don’t spend time hunting for low-carb bread at Aldi or Lidl — it’s not their strength. Use lettuce wraps for sandwiches, or buy LivLife bread from Tesco/Sainsbury’s and freeze it. When the Seriously Low Carb loaf appears in Aldi’s Special Buys, buy multiple and freeze those too.

Dairy & Cheese

This is where both stores genuinely shine. High-quality butter, cream, yogurt, and cheese at discounter prices — the foundation of a keto weekly shop.

Yogurt & Cream

Milbona High Protein Greek Style Yoghurt (Natural)

~£1.69
Lidl

Per 100g

4.1g

net carbs

Per serving

8.2g

per 200g

High

Excellent macros — 11g protein per 200g with just 4.1g carbs/100g. Thick texture from careful formulation, not starchy fillers. Stick to the plain/natural variant only.

Milbona Greek Style Natural Yogurt (Full Fat)

~£1.10
Lidl

Per 100g

4.5g

net carbs

Per serving

5.6g

per 125g

Medium

A simple, full-fat Greek yogurt at a great price. Slightly higher carbs than the protein version but cheaper and perfectly fine for liberal keto.

Specially Selected Greek Yogurt

~£1.89
Aldi

Per 100g

4.0g

net carbs

Per serving

5.0g

per 125g

Medium

Aldi's premium Greek yogurt. Rich and creamy with a clean ingredient list. Comparable to branded options at a much better price.

Cowbelle Double Cream (600ml)

~£2.19
Aldi

Per 100g

1.6g

net carbs

Per serving

0.8g

per 50ml

Low

Practically zero carbs. Essential for coffee, pan sauces, whipped keto desserts, and hitting your fat macro. The 600ml size is excellent value.

Important: Choose “Greek yogurt” (strained) over “Greek-style yogurt” (thickened with starches). Strained yogurt concentrates the protein and fat while discarding liquid whey and its lactose sugars. “Greek-style” products are often just regular yogurt with added thickeners and milk powder, which inflate the carb count.

Butter & Cheese

Specially Selected West Country Butter with Sea Salt

~£2.29
Aldi

Per 100g

0.1g

net carbs

Per serving

<0.1g

per 10g

Low

Near-zero carbs, beautifully rich flavour, and rivals premium grass-fed butters at a fraction of the cost. A keto essential.

Milbona High Protein Cheese Slices

~£1.99
Lidl

Per 100g

1.5g

net carbs

Per serving

0.3g

per 20g slice

Low

Convenient pre-sliced cheese with just 1.5g carbs/100g. No carb-based emulsifiers. Perfect for quick lunches and burger toppings.

Italiamo Provolone (Spicy or Mild)

~£2.99
Lidl

Per 100g

<1.0g

net carbs

Per serving

<0.5g

per 30g

Low

Lidl's Italian cheese range is excellent. Provolone is high-fat, virtually zero-carb, and melts beautifully. Great for snacking or cooking.

Boursin Garlic & Herbs

~£1.99
Both

Per 100g

3.5g

net carbs

Per serving

1.0g

per 30g

Low

Available at both stores. Rich, creamy, and incredibly versatile — stuff into chicken breasts, spread on cucumber, or eat straight from the tub.

Tip: Hard, aged cheeses (vintage cheddar, parmesan, pecorino) have virtually zero carbs because the ageing process exhausts the residual lactose. Both stores stock excellent own-brand vintage cheddars — always worth checking the Specially Selected (Aldi) or Deluxe (Lidl) range.

Meat & Fish

Unprocessed meat and fish are naturally zero-carb. The danger zone is processed products — sausages, burgers, and meatballs — where manufacturers add wheat rusk, onion powder, and dextrose as fillers.

Sausages — Read the Label Carefully

Specially Selected British Outdoor Bred Traditional Pork Sausages

~£2.49
Aldi

Per 100g

1.5g

net carbs

Per serving

1.0g

per sausage (66g)

Low

The best keto sausage at Aldi. High meat content, no wheat rusk, just 1g carbs per sausage. The Specially Selected range consistently beats standard lines on fillers.

Deluxe 6 Pork Sausages (400g)

~£2.49
Lidl

Per 100g

2.5g

net carbs

Per serving

1.5g

per sausage (59g)

Low

Lidl's premium pork sausages. Slightly higher carbs than Aldi's Specially Selected but still well within keto limits at 1.5g per sausage.

Specially Selected Aberdeen Angus Beef Sausages

~£2.69
Aldi — use caution

Per 100g

5.9g

net carbs

Per serving

5.4g

per sausage (91g)

Medium

Warning: same premium brand, but beef sausages contain far more fillers and flavourings than the pork variant. 5.4g per sausage — that's a quarter of a strict keto daily allowance in one sausage. Stick to pork.

Key lesson: Don’t assume all sausages from the same premium range have the same carbs. Beef sausages almost always contain more onion powder, starches, and binders than pork. Always flip the pack and check the back.

Cured Meats & Tinned Fish

The Deli Original Beef Biltong (40g)

~£1.99
Aldi

Per 100g

1.1g

net carbs

Per serving

0.4g

per 40g pack

Low

Far superior to jerky for keto — traditional biltong is air-dried with vinegar and spices, not marinated in sugar. Just 0.4g carbs per pack. Perfect desk or travel snack.

The Deli Mild Chorizo Salami

~£1.49
Aldi

Per 100g

5.0g

net carbs

Per serving

1.0g

per 20g

Low

Higher carbs per 100g than some cured meats, but the serving size is small. Good for charcuterie boards and lunch wraps in moderation.

Deluxe 4 Scottish Salmon Fillets

~£7.99
Lidl

Per 100g

0.0g

net carbs

Per serving

0.0g

per fillet

Low

Zero carbs, rich in omega-3s. The Deluxe range sources well. Bake with butter and lemon for the easiest keto dinner going.

Ocean Sea Sardines in Olive Oil

~£0.55
Lidl

Per 100g

0.0g

net carbs

Per serving

0.0g

per tin (drained)

Low

Possibly the best value keto food in any UK supermarket. Zero carbs, packed with omega-3, and just 55p. Choose olive oil over sunflower oil variants.

Snacks

Once you’re fat-adapted, you genuinely snack less — but when you do, these are the best options.

Moser Roth Finest Dark Chocolate 85%

~£1.79
Aldi

Per 100g

20.0g

net carbs

Per serving

5.0g

per 25g bar

Medium

Split into five individual 25g bars — built-in portion control. Each bar is exactly 5g carbs. Deep, rich flavour without the bitterness of 90%+ varieties.

J.D. Gross Dark Chocolate 85%

~£1.79
Lidl

Per 100g

21.4g

net carbs

Per serving

2.6g

per square (12.5g)

Low

Lidl's equivalent. Sold as a single block rather than individual bars, so portion discipline is on you. A couple of squares after dinner is the perfect keto treat.

Alesto Almonds (200g)

~£1.69
Lidl

Per 100g

4.8g

net carbs

Per serving

1.4g

per 30g

Low

One of the best keto nuts — high fat, moderate protein, low carbs. Avoid cashews and pistachios (much higher carbs). Almonds, pecans, macadamias, and walnuts are your best options.

Snackrite Pork Scratchings

~£0.89
Aldi

Per 100g

0.0g

net carbs

Per serving

0.0g

per bag

Low

Literally zero carbs. Pure collagen protein and fat. The ultimate keto crisp replacement. Look for 'scratchings' (denser, fattier) not 'pork crunch' (puffed, lighter).

Emporium Breaded Halloumi Fries (10 pack)

~£1.99
Aldi — Special Buy

Per 100g

2.9g

net carbs

Per serving

0.5g

per fry (16g)

Low

Despite the 'breaded' label, the coating is so minimal the carbs are just 2.9g/100g. Air-fry these for an incredible keto snack. A Special Buy that causes instant stockouts — grab them if you see them.

Pantry Staples

Grandessa 100% Peanut Butter Crunchy

~£1.49
Aldi

Per 100g

12.0g

net carbs

Per serving

1.8g

per 15g

Low

100% peanuts, nothing else. The 12g/100g carbs are from the peanuts themselves — complex plant fibre with minimal insulin impact. Portion control is key though.

Alesto Seed Mix (Sunflower, Pumpkin, Hemp, Linseed)

~£1.29
Lidl

Per 100g

6.4g

net carbs

Per serving

1.9g

per 30g

Low

Versatile pantry staple. Sprinkle on yogurt, add crunch to salads, or use as a binding agent in keto baking. Good ratio of healthy fats to fibre.

Solesta Extra Virgin Olive Oil (750ml)

~£4.49
Aldi

Per 100g

0.0g

net carbs

Per serving

0.0g

per 15ml

Low

Zero carbs, obviously. Essential for dressings, roasting, and finishing dishes. A decent quality EVOO at discounter pricing.

Bramwells 50% Less Sugar & Salt Ketchup

~£0.89
Aldi

Per 100g

18.3g

net carbs

Per serving

2.0g

per 15g (1 tbsp)

Low

True zero-sugar ketchup is rare at discounters. This reduced-sugar version works if you stick to a tablespoon — 2g carbs per serving. Don't pour freely.

Frozen

Four Seasons Frozen Cauliflower Rice (2x200g)

~£1.19
Aldi

Per 100g

3.9g

net carbs

Per serving

3.9g

per 100g

Medium

Saves the hassle of pulsing and draining fresh cauliflower. Just stir-fry from frozen. Perfect base for curries, stir-fries, and fajita bowls. Under 4g carbs per serving.

Freshona Frozen Mixed Berries

~£2.49
Lidl

Per 100g

8.0g

net carbs

Per serving

4.0g

per 50g

Medium

Berries are the most keto-friendly fruit. A 50g handful on Greek yogurt with double cream is a legitimate low-carb dessert. Keep portions small.

Frozen burger warning: Aldi’s frozen “100% Beef” burgers have had recipe changes — they now contain onion powders, starches, and fillers pushing carbs to ~4g per patty. The “100% Beef” claim legally refers only to the meat fraction, not the entire product. If you want a genuinely zero-carb burger, buy fresh mince and form your own patties. It takes 30 seconds and you know exactly what’s in them.

Products to AVOID

These are the “health halo” traps — products that look keto-friendly thanks to aggressive marketing but will blow your carb budget in a single serving.

❌ Lidl Rowan Hill High Protein Tortilla Wraps

29g carbs per wrap. Despite the huge “High Protein” branding, the base is standard wheat flour with added protein isolate. One wrap exceeds a strict keto daily limit. This is not a replacement for the discontinued protein rolls.

❌ Lidl Rowan Hill High Protein Sandwich Thins

17.1g carbs per thin. Same problem — refined wheat flour base, protein powder added on top. The protein claim is technically true but irrelevant if you’re counting carbs.

❌ Milbona High Protein Strawberry Yogurt (and other fruit flavours)

~7g carbs per 100g, up to 16g per pot. The plain natural variant is excellent at 4.1g/100g. The fruit flavours are loaded with sugar, concentrated fruit purée, and modified starch. Always check — same brand, very different macros.

❌ The Foodie Market Cashew Crush Raw Fruit & Nut Bars

16g carbs per 35g bar. “Raw” and “natural” doesn’t mean low-carb. These bars use dates as a binding agent — dates are essentially pure fructose. Sugar is sugar regardless of source, and fructose goes straight to liver glycogen, kicking you out of ketosis.

❌ Any bar labelled “Keto” that uses maltitol

Check the ingredients list of any “keto” branded bar. If it contains maltitol, treat it with extreme caution — maltitol has a glycaemic index of 35–50 and will spike your blood sugar almost as much as regular sugar. Erythritol is fine; maltitol is not.

Aldi vs Lidl vs Tesco — How Do They Compare?

For a low-carb weekly shop, here’s the realistic picture:

Aldi wins on: butter, cream, pork scratchings, biltong, dark chocolate (Moser Roth), peanut butter, cauliflower rice. Their Specially Selected sausages are the best-value keto sausage in any UK supermarket.

Lidl wins on: cheese range (especially Italiamo), sardines in olive oil, almonds, seed mixes, full-fat Greek yogurt. The Milbona dairy range is consistently strong.

Tesco wins on: bread (LivLife and BFree are permanently stocked), snack variety (Cheesies, Peperami multipacks), and broader range of specialist keto products. You pay roughly £24/month more for the privilege.

The optimal strategy: Do your main shop at Aldi or Lidl for meat, dairy, eggs, and pantry staples. Pick up LivLife bread and any specialist items from Tesco. This gives you discounter pricing on the bulk of your spend and Tesco’s range where the discounters fall short.
